Reading!

In the midst of my writer's block I began to do something I haven't done for a very long time. I began to read. I've read and read and read and read. It seems I can't read enough. And as I'm reading ideas keep popping into my mind about how I can create children's books from themes I'm reading in my adult thrillers. Lee Childs has become my new favorite author. His books are causing me to lose sleep. I hang onto each and every word while I think about my childhood friends and how we always had a "detective club" going on.

My last name was Jones. My best friend's last name was Taylor. Somehow I think the JoTay Sisters is a series STILL waiting to happen.

And while the series is still churing in my mind I've switched gears a little bit. Right now I'm reading Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway. This has really been a good summer for me. What are you reading and what would you suggest?

I am reading "How to Live" about what old people have to say about getting old. Just finished "House Rules" by Jodi Picoult and "Crow Planet" by a local Seattle author. All good books, and I'm enjoying them myself. It's been a LONG time since I read "Farewell to Arms." I'm sure it would be like a first read if I went back and read it again.

Can you believe I do not read at all. Not one bit.

But I know many people who love to read and are so thankful when they find that special book that takes them away to another land.

The JoTay Sisters' Detective Club sounds like a fun idea.

I'm currently reading "In The Sea There Are Crocodiles", it's based on a true story. I just finished "Rebecca" and a new one called "The Lantern".

Any Earnest Hemingway book is excellent. Reading does stimulate the imagination. I have an idea for a short story and a children's book and I'm not really a writer!

I am so glad you are reading, Jan. I would rather read than write. It is like taking up again with an old friend.

"The Help" is a brilliant book, just been made into a film I think. "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" is an absolutely wonderful read. Also Dick Francis wrote many crime/thrillers about the English horse racing world. His son has just taken over. You also might like Robbert Goddard who wrote some briliant thrillers like "Past Caring" and "Into the Blue".

I might just give Lee Childs a go. Thanks. x

Hi, Jan

I'm reading Phillips Reeve at the moment. I came across his excellent Mortal Engines series a few years ago and enjoyed them. I'm now reading Fever Crumb - the sequel to his Mortal Engines series and it's brilliant. I'm finding that because I have two part finished novels on the go for children, I'm reading more in that genre/age group.

I love a good biography from time to time. I stumbled across Paula Dean's Bio and it was a page turner. I was at the beach in Malibu and could not put it down, it was incredibly inspiring to read about her transformation.

We are always reinventing ourselves, and evolving so I find it really moving to read how others did so. Life is a constant learning experience.
