Making Mittens Come Alive...A writing exercise for winter

How about a writing activity that makes mittens come alive? Here's a starter sentence for you: I am Sandy's mitten. OR **I am _____ (your name in blank) mitten.

Just go on from there...I am Sandy's mitten. When she pushes her cold hands into me I want to shiver but there's no time! Why you ask? Because she can't wait to scoop of a handful of snow and make a snowball!

You get the idea...Once the mitten becomes real it can really get exciting! Let me know what you think!

Oooh, this is fun! I actually started doing the writing exercise when I was in high school (um...30 years ago??), and loved it then. I find that one can ask for first thirty seconds, then a minute, and keep raising the bar until the students can write for 10-20 minutes without flinching. It's a good exercise.

I am Sandy's Mittens. I had such a troubling start in life; first was a skein of yarn, then she put me on sharp tiny knitting needles, then ripped me off. Oh, the pain of it all. I tried to hide, but no; there she is. She tries me on larger knitting needles and I'm beginning to feel important. She's gone bezerk, she's ripped me off again. Where are the bandaides, have you no care for my feelings?

I hit a day, but then she picked me up lovingly once again; but this time she had her favorite crochet hook in hand and introduced me to it. And now look, I'm very important. I'm a complete pair of mittens and I'm going to help someone keep warmer. Thats pretty important!
